Storm trackers are watching Hurricane Rachel make her way toward Mexico — the west coast of Mexico, that is. Floridians have no cause for worry from this storm at this time. With just a few days left in September, usually the busiest month during the Atlantic hurricane season according to the NOAA, the state has dodged the four named storms this year, apparently continuing our winning streak.
We are not quite finished with our discussion of long-term disability insurance.
As we said in our last post, long-term disability insurance is wage replacement insurance. Health insurance, auto insurance, life insurance, property insurance — they reimburse insureds for the expense or a portion of the expense of a covered event. Long-term and short-term disability insurance kick in when a covered event affects the insured’s earning power.
It may be more accurate to call both short-term and long-term disability insurance “wage replacement insurance.” Let’s back up a little before we get into that.
As any longtime resident of Florida can attest, 1992 to 2005 proved to be an especially brutal stretch for hurricanes as the state was hit by seven storms ranging in severity from category 3 to 5. In addition to the unimaginable human toll, these storms also caused billions of dollars in damages to homes, businesses, farmland and local infrastructure.

It may look as if the federal government is a classic example of one hand not knowing what the other is doing, but 310,000 people now know or will soon know differently. It turns out that their Affordable Care Act applications or enrollment records do not agree with the records of the Citizenship and Immigration Services division of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The ACA only covers people who are in the country legally.
Is there anything easy about insurance? Health insurance has been a flashpoint for controversy for years now. Auto insurance has gone through some tough times, too, especially since the advent of no-fault coverage. Homeowners insurance — most Florida homeowners would likely start any discussion about property insurance by saying, “Don’t even get me started.”
