Is there anything easy about insurance? Health insurance has been a flashpoint for controversy for years now. Auto insurance has gone through some tough times, too, especially since the advent of no-fault coverage. Homeowners insurance — most Florida homeowners would likely start any discussion about property insurance by saying, “Don’t even get me started.”
Generally, there isn’t much that’s easy about insurance, except, perhaps, paying those premiums month after month and year after year. As a friend of ours once said, “Insurance is all about what the policyholder can do for the company, not the other way around.”
That may be a little harsh for our tastes, but we are more than familiar with the problems that insurance companies can cause just when a policyholder needs their help. Delays in paying claims, claim denials, appeals, pre-authorizations and other coverage hoops — the process can be overwhelming, demoralizing and, in the worst cases, fruitless.
The truth is, insurance is not easy. That’s why policyholders who realize they can’t go it alone call on attorneys for assistance.
You really have to work with insurance companies and insurance policies for a long time to understand the ins and outs of claims handling and coverage disputes. Not only may internal processes differ from insurer to insurer, but regulatory requirements may differ, too. Understanding those differences — and their impact on coverage — before a problem arises allows an attorney to handle a policyholder’s problem quickly and efficiently.
We have spent more than a decade dealing with insurance companies on a wide variety of issues. We have experience with life, health, auto, homeowners, flood and long-term disability insurance, just to name a few. Our objective is to find a positive resolution to the problem, whether through simple negotiation, more formal mediation or even a trial.
